5TH ANNUAL HEAD VASE SHOW AND SALE

Saturday January 18, 1997

(Head Vase Convention January 17-19)

Kay Johnson attended the Head Vase Convention and sent me the following news to share with all of you! I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I have. A big thanks to Kay for sharing - what a great write-up!!

The fifth annual Headhunters Newsletter Convention held in beautiful but chilly Orlando, Florida was the best one yet. Over 300 people attended this fun event. Can you headhunters imagine this....a room filled with 5,512 heads for sale!!! Those of us who arrived early got together in the hotel lobby for fun and sharing on Thursday evening. Friday most of the headhunters attended the huge Renninger's Extravaganza in Mt. Dora just north of Orlando. It is a large and treasure filled flea market. The competition was fierce but lots of fun. I purchased three mint heads in the box from one dealer who got them in Canada. Others found treasures also. I also got two Hedi Schoop figural planters and three other lovely lady planters. Friday night we had a dessert reception and viewed slides of Enesco heads including their newest line of Barbie and Disney heads. It was so nice to get together with old friends from previous conventions and meet new ones. Many collectors brought pictures of their collections. We headhunters seems to never tire of looking at these lovely ladies and saying "Oh, I want that one!!" or "I got that one at a garage sale for only $3.00."

Saturday morning the dealers started setting up at 7am and the doors opened for the big sale at 9am. What excitement!!! I imagine everyone found something to add to their collection..new collectors and those of us who have been collecting for a while. There were several people selling their collections along with our faithful dealers who have been with us from the beginning. We all saw heads we had never seen before. I purchased 9 new heads for my collection including the much sought after and very rare "Love" head. (Cole plate 66 #3) She is a beauty and will occupy a special place in my collection.

The Saturday night banquet was lovely. The food was wonderful and the fun and laughs even better. A number of prizes were awarded: The oldest collector was over 80 and the youngest an adorable one year old. A couple from Australia won two prizes...one for the most heads purchases (160) and the other for traveling the furthermost distance to attend. There were lots of others and what's better than a free head to add to your collection!! A slide show was presented depicting various ways we collectors display our heads. What a delight this was....and gave some of us new ideas for displaying our own collections.

A Sunday morning breakfast and demonstration on repairing heads was the conclusion of events. I didn't attend this meeting because we were anxious to get on our way home and put the 900+ miles behind us. We drove for the first time this year but had lots of fun exploring antique malls along the way. My husband and I agree this was a fun filled event for the both of us. He is not a collector but knows how much I love my heads, headhunting and all the wonderful people we meet along the way. We are already looking forward to the 1998 convention. Please make plans to join us...you won't be disappointed! And what a wonderful time to take the family to Disney...just a few miles from the Raddison where the headhunters meet.
