The St. Louis, MO Auction

About the Auction...........

As told by Gabrielle Hrin

The auction was held October 25th in Springfield, MO. The day before the auction was the "preview" day where you could go and look over each and every head that would be auctioned. I had asked my mom to ride along with me and we decided to head up (it's about a four hour drive) Friday afternoon. We arrived at the auction house early in the afternoon and other than the photographer we were the only ones there at the time. One of the auctioneers there was overseeing the viewing, and mentioned the number of absentee bids they had received from all over the U.S. I had never seen so many heads at one time! There were ladies, babies, animals, religious, even ones my mom said looked like they were from a Tim Burton movie!

The auction began the next day at 10:00 am sharp. I was so nervous -- there were only about 30-40 people at the auction. I had set my sights on three in particular -- I was able to get two of them so I felt pretty lucky. Some went rather cheap others sky high! The prize items for bid and what they sold for were:

  • 3-3/4" Nurse - $200.00 Mint Condition
  • Small "Lucy" - $150.00 Slight Damage
  • Jackie O - $275.00 Mint Condition
  • 11" Floa Belle - $625.00 Chip on bottom
  • 9" Nellie - $425.00

The shocker (and the one I also wished for) was the Relpo Lady (#K190 - P/W #220) that went for $925.00!!! Also going a little high were Christmas heads, in particular young children/baby types.

The auction was over in about 4 hours. I had two very nice ladies from Belleville, IL (close to St. Louis) that we sat next to. Carol (one of the gals), has over 300 heads in her collection! I had a great time... I was able to get four beauties to add to my collection, spend a great weekend with my mom and meet some very nice people!
