News, Tips, and Hints

By Kay Johnson

There is always something exciting to talk about when it comes to the heads we all know and love. Something one of the ladies in the collectors' corner said reminded me of this:

We have spotted head vases in several movies/tv programs during the past few years. It's always fun to spot one of our ladies in the limelight. Just the other night I was watching a made for tv movie and I spotted one of my Weil ware lady planters on a bedside table!! These are full figure ladies with vases attached to their skirts. Most of them have a spray of flowers across their full skirts. Many of us head vase collectors are branching out into these planters. They are made by many different companies just as the head vases. Weil ware, Kim Ward, Kay, Hedi Schoop, etc. They are gaining in popularity so you might want to keep your eye out for some bargains in this area. Of course, Kaye also makes head vases. Let's keep our eyes out for our ladies in the movies!!! Let us know when you spot one. There is one in the beauty shop scene of Steel Magnolias! I spotted a chalk head on a shelf in a tv movie..can't remember the name..and have seen a couple of others.

Most of the hints I have to offer are for new collectors. Most of us have taken pictures of our heads and carry them with us when we go shopping for heads. After a while it can be very confusing trying to remember which ones we have...especially when trying to complete a set of the same head in different sizes/colors, eyes closed, eyes open, etc. I also have my books marked. ( I have a set of autographed books that I don't mark in.) I took my Posgay book and first Cole books apart, hole punched the pages and have them in a ring binder notebook (using lots of hole reinforces). This all probably seems like a lot of work but I couldn't function without my books and pictures. The people in the antique malls always enjoy looking at the pictures and are themselves amazed at the number of heads there are out there. Another idea I have found useful is having business cards printed with a picture (or two of my favorite heads), my personal information, etc. I leave these with dealers, antique malls, etc. and ask them to get in touch with me if they get heads in the shop. This has paid off more than once for me. Kinko's did a really nice job for me. Kinko's also scans pictures and puts them on a disk for you!!

Well, enough for now. I enjoy the email I get from all of you and love talking about our ladies!!! If you have questions please send them and I will do my best to provide you with some assistance.

Until next time...Good Hunting,
Kay.
